Our analysis

This study is based on tests carried out by users of the nPerf mobile application, available for free on iOS and Android. Between January 1st, 2021 and December 31st, 2021, users of the nPerf app completed 56,684 tests, distributed as follows, after filtering:

Sunrise becomes the leader in Swiss mobile internet. Thanks to its victory, sometimes shared with Swisscom, on all the indicators studied, this provider wins the score battle in our 2021 barometer. Since 2019, its progress, particularly pronounced on download and upload speeds, has been the strongest of the three providers, and has enabled it to take the first place, to the detriment of the last winner, Swisscom.

It should be noted that more than 50% of the tests carried out on the Sunrise network are in 5G.

Swisscom, second, remains in the race. Indeed, it shows good performance and encouraging improvements compared to 2019.

As proof, it manages to share first place with Sunrise on the success rate, the latency and the quality of experience (web browsing and YouTube streaming)!

Salt, the third-placed operator, has been less consistent than its rivals and has generally performed below average: it is currently the only operator not to have passed the 100,000 nPerf points mark.

In terms of 5G, Sunrise is the clear winner on all indicators, with a gap of more than 15,000 points over second-placed Swisscom and around 23,500 points over Salt.

Statistics based on 12,000 tests performed on compatible 5G terminals, allowing the identification of the 5G technology (Android only).

This average rate is relatively high in the country, even exceeding 50% of the tests at Sunrise.

More generally, the Swiss sector is in good health, as can be seen from the statistics and progress presented by the main operators. Two years after our last publication, Salt has gained almost 11,000 nPoints (+14%), Swisscom 16,000 (+18%), and Sunrise 25,000 (+30%).

So the year ahead looks very exciting… should we expect any surprises? Of course, nPerf will keep an eye on the evolution of events!
