Introduction to nPerf Servers

nPerf servers play a crucial role in measuring the performance of Internet connections by sending and receiving data during speed tests. The accuracy of these tests hinges on the quality and strategic placement of the servers within the network.

Benefits of Hosting a nPerf Server

By hosting a nPerf server, you contribute to a global initiative aimed at evaluating broadband and mobile Internet quality. As a hosting partner, you gain access to detailed test data, enhancing your understanding of network performance. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can offer customers the ability to test connections directly within their network for optimal results.

Hosting Requirements

To ensure high availability and reliability, nPerf servers must be housed in data centers. Recommended configurations include:

  • Hardware:
  • 2-core CPU @ 1.6 GHz+ (2.5 GHz+ for 10 Gb/s connections)
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 20 GB HDD
  • 1 Gb/s (or more) symmetric connection
  • Compatible with VMWare, Xen, KVM, etc.
  • 64-bit Linux OS (Debian 11/12 or Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 preferred)
  • Software:

Debian 11/12 or Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 dist with minimal install (without GUI stuff) and SSH server installed.

Installation Process

nPerf offers two installation options:

  • Managed Server:

nPerf takes care of software installation, server security, maintenance, and updates. The partner provides a server with Debian/Ubuntu and root access.

  • Unmanaged Server:

Detailed installation guidelines are available for those with strong Linux system knowledge.

Getting Started

To become a hosting partner, visit nPerf’s Host a Server page for more information and to initiate the process. Hosting a server not only aids in enhancing Internet performance measurement but also provides valuable data to the hosting partner.

By participating in this collaborative project, you contribute to the global effort of improving Internet connectivity quality while benefiting from precise performance data and network insights.
